Stano Landscaping recently received three prestigious awards for its role in a major landscape renovation project at the Wisconsin Club (Milwaukee). The awards include a "Gold Award" and a "Judges Choice Award for the Best Overall Poject" in the Wisconsin Landscape Contractors Association (WLCA) Awards Program, and a "Grand Award" (Commercial Landscape Contracting category) in the 41st Annual Environmental Improvement Awards Program sponsored by PLANET, the Professional Landcare Network.
The project includes a paved entryway and inviting outdoor dining area and gardens, This was the final phase of the Club's ten-year renovation project. The resulting new "outdoor look" features a beautiful entryway through the private gates, a walkway and gardens surrounding a historic Belvedere gazebo (1873) and a new outdoor social and dining area along the south grounds. These additions enhance the Club's views, both inside and out.
Landscape construction faced several critical challenges along the way -- namely:
a short time frame of less than 120 days
the facility was open daily for lunch, dinner and parties during construction
the large, circular paver drive surrounds a fountain and required logistical sequencing to allow building access for other trades and construction traffic.
hardscaping around the fragile, historic gazebo required extra care
The finished entryway incorporates an ADA wheelchair accessible ramp for guests. To soften the visual effect of the ramp, plant material was added on both sides.
STANO GREEN ROOFS RECEIVE NATIONAL RECOGNITION

Stano Landscaping takes pride in its Grand Award for "The St. Luke's Healing Garden" in the 40th Annual Environmental Improvement Awards Program sponsored by PLANET, the Professional Landcare Network. These green roof gardens at St. Luke's Hospital were specially-designed to provide indoor and outdoor sitting areas on a year-round basis.
The indoor conservatory provides a serene, climate-controlled garden environment. The interior garden offers a tropical theme, with gracefully branched trees, trickling water and vivid shrubs and flowers amid lush groundcovers. Most notably, the indoor garden is accessible to doctors, medical personnel, patients and their visitors, regardless of weather.
It's interesting to note that PLANET's Environment Improvement Awards reflect the association's commitment to creating and preserving the beauty of our country's landscape. The organization represents approximately 4,200 green industry service-provider companies and suppliers nationwide. Its member firms specialize in lawn care, design/build installation and interior plantscaping and landscape management. These firms and their employees represent more than 100,000 green industry professionals.
Previously, another Stano greenroof received recognition for design excellence. The green roof at Milwaukee School of Engineering was named a 2008 Project of Distinction by the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc., Wisconsin Chapter last year and was awarded a Gold Award in the category of Green Building.
Special mention was made of the interesting features of its green roof. Stano Landscaping is proud to have been a part of this unique green roof project which included dramatic sculptures, decorative planters and concrete paver work as well as the installation of intensive soil mix, planting, sodding and irrigation.
GREEN ROOF PORTFOLIO SHOWCASES STANO SPECIALTY
Stano Landscaping first introduced greenroof installations as a service offering in 2006.
Since then, the demand for these special installations has grown steadily as more and more organizations have made conscious decisions to go "green." To date, Stano has installed more greenroofs than any other Milwaukee landscape contractor, and its greenroof portfolio includes:
Bayshore Mall
Milwaukee School of Engineering Man at Work Art Museum
University Club Tower
River Renaissance
Froedert Hospital Cancer Center Greenroof
Mortara Instrument Greenroof
Eastcastle Place
Greenroofs require intricate planning and typically include special drainage, pavers, engineered topsoil, irrigation, and trees, shrubs, perennials and annual plantings. Stano works hand-in-hand with area landscape architects, general contractors and roofing contractors on its green roof projects.

STANO: Supporting Our Troops Through Project Evergreen
Lawn and landscape maintenance often becomes a hardship when a family’s major breadwinner is away on active duty in the military. Fortunately, GreenCare for Troops is helping to fill the gap. This nationwide outreach program, coordinated by Project EverGreen, connects local green industry professionals with men and women serving our country in the armed forces away from home.
Recently, Stano Landscaping provided landscape services at the home of a local military family in West Allis. "We were happy to be able to help the Stephens family at 9003 West Schlinger Avenue," commented Matt Stano. "Their new front entry planting will be a nice surprise for her husband when he returns." Fox 6 News covered the work in progress in its July 22nd "News at 5."
Currently more than 2,200 volunteers are providing free lawn and landscape services for more than 8,000 military families nationwide through the GreenCare program. For more information, visit the GreenCare for Troops website.
