A GARDEN CALENDAR FOR APRIL
Week #1 Rake the lawn as
weather permits. Begin removing mulch from roses, strawberries,
bulbs and perennial beds. Do it in stages, as weather permits.
Start your compost pile with these materials in the yard. Complete
shrub- and tree-pruning chores. Prune diseased, dead or
winter-damaged branches. Grapevines, bush fruits and roses can be
prunes at this time.
Week #2 To kill overwintering insects, apply
dormant sprays before plants begin to bud. Temperatures should be
a least 40 degrees for eight hours after application. Note:
Because we have experienced a warm winter with little snow, it is
especially important that a dormant oil application on you shrubs
be performed this year. Check your lawn for a thatch problem.
Dethatching is necessary if there is a half-inch or more of dead
material between soil and plants. As soon as soil can be worked,
seed or sod bare areas in you lawn. Use a blend of at least 3
varieties of Kentucky bluegrass, a red fescue and perennial rye grass.
Week #3 Check spruce
trees for brownish, pineapple-shaped swellings at the tips of
branches. This indicates that spruce gall aphids are present.
Fertilize your trees and shrubs. Prune spring flowering shrubs
after they have bloomed. Begin regular lawn mowing when the grass
turns green and begins to grow. Mowing should be at one inch in
length to get old, dry grass blades out of the way of new
growth.
Week #4 Apply a pre-emergent herbicide for crab grass control to
lawn Stano Landscaping offers all of the above services as part of
our Lawn Care Doing your part will help insure the success of your
lawn and planting and enhance the appearance of your landscape.

Stano-gram -- A GARDEN CALENDAR FOR MAY
Week #1 Stake peonies when they are 15
inches tall. Start planting gladiolus. Divide and/or transplant
perennials/ornamental grasses if necessary.
Week #2 Apply herbicides several days after
mowing, when the leaves are fully expanded. Apply systemic
insecticides for roses and dahilas. Trees and shrubs should be
planted now .
Week #3 Apply fertilizer to lawn (this can be
combined with a broadleaf weed control application). Use no more
than one pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. Continue spraying
fruit trees for insect and disease control. Fertilize
spring-flowering bulbs before or during bloom. Remove flower heads
after blossoms fade, but leave foliage on the bulbs until it turns
brown and dies. Prune damaged branches from spring-flowering shrubs
as soon as they have finished blooming. Continue tree, fruit insect
and disease pest controls. Look for scale, spruce gall, borer and
inchworms. Fertilize trees and shrubs.
Week #4 Mow lawns at 2 1/2" height.. Apply
pre-emergent herbicide over plant bed and water thoroughly. Plant
flowering bedding plants, geraniums and tuberous rooted begonias. If
spider mites appear on shrubs, hosing plants once per week may take
care of them. If problems continue, they may require a chemical
application.

Stano-gram -- A GARDEN CALENDAR FOR JUNE
Week #1 Trim and shape hedges after they have
about six inches of new growth. Cut half of the new growth. Make the
top of the hedge narrower than the base so sunlight can reach clear
to the ground A wide top shades lower parts, which may eventually
become devoid of foliage. Plant gladiolus bulbs until about June
15th. Plant flowering annuals and outdoor flowering bulbs such as
dahlias, tuberous begonias, caladiums and callas. Tall dahlias
should be staked at planting time. Spray for apple scab using captan
or benlate. Insect control must be repeated at 10 to 14 day
intervals.
Week #2 Mow the lawn as often as necessary to
avoid removing more than 1/3 of the leaf surface at any one time.
Prune spring flowering shrubs such as lilac, forsythia, flowering
quince and mock orange after the flowers have died. Apply mulch to
flower beds for weed control and moisture retention. Check for
leafhoppers on honeylocust trees. Spray with Sevin, malathion or
diazinon.
Week #3 Apply to lawn a light application of
nitrogen, about one-half pound of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square
feet. Prune evergreens by trimming new growth. Pinch mums to
encourage new shoots. To pinch, remove the top half inch of each
shoot when it is 6 inches long.
Week #4 Lawns infected with fusarium blight
should be treated now. Spraying with benomyl and watering lightly
daily through September will maintain and strengthen grass plants
with damaged roots. Water newly planted trees and shrubs (about 1
inch of per week) and monitor plants in containers and hanging
baskets. Make a weekly check for insect and disease problems.
