A GARDEN CALENDAR FOR OCTOBER
Week#1
There is still time to transplant some of the spring flowering perennials.
It is planting time for spring flowering bulbs. Also start some bulbs for indoor forcing
while you are planting tulips, daffodils and hyacinths outside.
Water your evergreens deeply several times before the ground freezes.
Second Week
Keep mowing the lawn as long as the grass keeps growing. Don't change the mower
height; leave it at 2 inches.
You still can transplant some of the spring-flowering perennials like peonies.
Pick a good spot for storing pesticides. Avoid freezing temperatures for liquids and
damp areas for dusts and powders.
Third Week
Rose protection can begin by mounding soil around the bushes after the first killing frost.
Pile 8 to 10 inches around the canes. Then tie the canes so the wind can't whip them.
Later, cover the mounds with straw or hay. Use additional soil, plastic rose cones or
chicken wire to hold the mulch in place.
Trees can be mulched for winter. It might be wise to apply a tree wrap or hardware cloth
shield to protect the trunks from hungry rodents.
Rake leaves off the lawn at least once a week. If they get wet and mat on the grass they
can smother the grass.
Fourth Week
Transplanting trees after leaf fall can be done, with certain precautions. Water the areas
thoroughly. Take as large of a root ball as possible. Prune a third of the terminal
branches to balance the root loss and the top needs.
If rain is not supplying an inch of water a week, evergreens will require additional
moisture from thorough soaking before the soil freezes. These plants will continue to
lose water from their foliage during the winter, but the roots will be limited in their
ability to replace it, with resulting damage to needles or leaves. Sending evergreens into
winter well watered can minimize the chance of injury.
After their leaves fall, birch, maple walnut and elm trees can be pruned. Pruning now
will avoid the loss of sap that happens with spring pruning.
Remove annual plantings after the first hard frost. Replace with mums, pansies or kale for
fall color.
Flower pots should be emptied and stored for the winter.

A GARDEN CALENDAR FOR NOVEMBER
First Week
Mow your lawn as long as it keeps growing. Keep it at a height of 2 to 2½ inches.
Spring-flowering bulbs can be planted outdoors until the ground freezes but it is not a
good practice to delay. Weather conditions are not predictable.
Rake leaves from the lawn once a week to prevent them from matting and smothering the
grass
Second Week
Start forming soil mounds around your roses. Build them up to a height of 10 inches or
more. Then mulch with marsh hay in a suitable enclosure after the ground freezes.
Use recommended insecticides according to label instructions.
Be certain that evergreens, trees and shrubs are watered sufficiently before the ground
freezes.
Birch, maple, walnut and elm trees can be pruned after leaf fall. Stake and tie newly
planted trees as needed to keep them from being whipped and uprooted by wind. Young,
thin-barked trees also may be injured in winter when bright sun heats one side while the
other remains cold. Prevent bark splitting due to unequal heating by enclosing the trunks
in tree wrap, shading the trunks or painting them with white latex paint.
Third Week
Fertilize your lawn before the first snow. Apply 1 to 1½ pounds of actual nitrogen per
1000 square feet or bluegrass lawn. Late fall fertilization provides for root growth now
and early greening up in the spring. Ground Ivy or Creeping Charlie is best controlled in
fall after the first frost.
Peonies and most perennials can be clipped to ground level after heavy frosts. Apply
mulch only after the ground is frozen.
Fourth Week
Protect plants near walks, driveways or roads that will be treated with deicing salt. Tar-
backed burlap tacked to stakes place between the plants and the street will protect them
from salt spray injury.
To prevent breakage from heavy snow loads, use chicken-wire fencing to support
boxwood and yew hedges or wrap strong cord around upright junipers.
Check your trees and shrubs to be certain they are rodent-proofed. Put mouse bait out
before the snow falls, especially in areas where you had damage last year.

A GARDEN CALENDAR FOR DECEMBER
First Week
Store pesticides according to label directions. Liquids should not be permitted to freeze.
Granular materials should be kept where it is dry.
After the ground has frozen to a depth of 2 to 3 inches, complete mulching outdoor plants such
as tulip beds, roses and chrysanthemums. Use a 4-to-6 inch mulch of straw, hay, evergreen
boughs or cut-up leaves.
Make a final cleanup of the yard. Fallen fruit, leaves, dead plant material and other debris should
be removed from lawn. This will help reduce next year's insect and disease problems by
depriving over-wintering insects of shelter and by removing disease organisms.
Second Week
Make or order your Christmas wreath. Prunings from your own evergreens can be used.
Check your shrubs and trees. Protection is needed from rabbits, mice, wind and salt.
Purchase a fresh Christmas tree or cut your own. Keep it in water in a cool place until you bring
it into the house for decorating. Then make a fresh trunk cut and be certain the tree has a
constant water supply.
Third Week
Salt used on walks and drives for ice removal can have a disastrous affect on plant growth next
year. Use carefully.
Double check electrical lights for safety before stringing them on an indoor Christmas tree or on
outdoor evergreens and shrubs. Frayed wires and short circuits can be dangerous.
Fourth Week
After snow and ice storms, check for weather or animal damage to trees and shrubs and repair as
soon as possible. Loose snow should be gently brushed off of shrubs before it turns to ice and
freezes solid on branches.
