A GARDEN CALENDAR FOR JANUARY
First Week
Regularly check trees and shrubs for damage. Remove heavy accumulations
of ice and snow as soon as possible. Look for signs of rodent damage. Use
baits or fencing when needed. Prune broken branches immediately. Tree
wrap can still be used on sensitive young stock.
Use your discarded Christmas tree to shield sun-sensitive shrubs. Place it on
the south or west sides of the plants. You also might clip off branches for
late mulching. Burning the current year's tree in the fireplace is not
recommended. Too much creosote would result.
Second Week
Inspect your garden tools if you haven't already. Clean and repair handles.
Sharpen and oil blades.
Try to shovel walks and drives before ice forms. Use of salt in the winter on
ice surfaces may cause plant problems throughout the growing season.
Third Week
Check bulbs in storage; remove any rotten material as soon as possible.
This is a good time to build a cold frame for this year's home-grown bedding
plants.
Check winter mulches; add material where necessary.
Check your coleus and geranium cuttings; they made need some pinching to
keep them from becoming spindly.
Fourth Week
Tulip bulbs potted and cooled for forcing should have a good root system by
now and may begin putting up some top growth. They can be brought out
into the light and into good growing temperatures when they have 2 inches
of new top growth.
Spring-flowering shrubs can be forced if they have gone through a long
enough cold period. Dogwood and forsythia are two of the easier types to
try. Cut off branches that show fat buds, and soak the twigs overnight in
warm water. Place the twigs in a bright, cool room, moistening the buds
every day. It my take three weeks before you have flowers.

A GARDEN CALENDAR FOR FEBRUARY
First Week
Inspect and repair any damage to shrubs and trees caused by snow, ice and rodents.
Gently shake now accumulation off of shrubs and evergreens to prevent the weight from
breaking branches.
Second Week
Forced bulbs should be almost ready to bloom after 14 weeks of cold-temperature
treatment in pots. Tap the soil out of the pot to see if there are lots of roots. The shoots
of tulips or other bulb plants should be several inches tall and some can be brought into
the light for indoor flowering.
Third Week
Poinsettias and azaleas need continual care. Fertilize them every two or three weeks.
Fourth Week If the forecast is for
at least 40 degrees and there is little chance of frost, apply
dormant spray to trees, shrubs and woody plants. By spraying before
plants bud, you can eliminate many pests that could harm your plant
material later in the season. Check mulches placed around outdoor
perennials and over spring bulbs for winter protection. If needed,
replace mulch. Heaving of the soil will be minimal with a proper
mulch.
A GARDEN CALENDAR FOR MARCH
First Week
Shrubs and shade trees can be pruned, with some exceptions. Spring-flowering shrubs
should be pruned after they flower, but summer flowering shrubs may be pruned now.
Birch, maple, elm and walnut trees will bleed if pruned now. Summer or early-fall
pruning is best for them.
Second Week
Check trees and shrubs for damage by rodents, snow or ice. Severely damaged plants
will benefit from quick pruning.
Third Week
Don't rush to remove mulches. A cycle of freezing and thawing may cause problems.
Fourth Week I
Plant or transplant trees and shrubs as soon as the soil is tillable. The earlier the planting,
the less the transplant shock.
Check the lawn for thatch buildup. Dethatching of the lawn should be schedule for late
March or April.
